We often get calls from customers who tell us, "I need a string. It's a D (or A or...)." Since there is no shortage of different makers whose string specifications vary widely, we need a few more specifics before we can properly fill that order!
FIRST: What is the make and model of your harp? Strings are harp specific, except for pedal harps.
Pedal harp string gauges are divided by octave which begin with the highest E and proceed down seven notes to the following F. For example, middle C is in the fourth octave.
Lever harp string specifications vary from builder to builder. Most makers will furnish a string gauge chart as part of the package, so don't lose that piece of paper. Sometimes it is glued inside of your harp. We need to know what kind of harp it is: Triplett, Dusty Strings, Blevins, Thormahlen, etc. Instead of division by octave, they are identified by number. To know which one is needed, start counting at the smallest, shortest string (we call this the TOP of the harp) proceeding towards the lowest, longest one. EXAMPLE: a 34 string harp, such as the Blevins Encore, would have #1 at the highest end as the beginning and #34 at the lowest end as the last one. For example, if the middle C breaks on a Blevins Encore, count from the shortest, #1, to the broken one, #20. Then go to the handy string gauge chart and find that particular string, which is a .055 monofilament. There are some exceptions to this rule. The Salvi and Lyon & Healy nonpedal harps (examples: Troubadour, Prelude, Heather, L&H Folk Harp) use pedal harp strings and are divided by octave like the pedal harps.
A backup replacement set is always a good thing to have on hand. With the extremes in temperature, humidity, and weather changes that many areas of the country experience, one can never predict which string is likely to pop unexpectedly.
We only stock replacement strings for the brands that we specifically sell. If you need strings for a brand we don't carry, call Robinson's Harp Shop in California at (619) 473-8556.
