Description
A standard in our current pedal harp repertoire, and has been since its debut in the early 20th century. The Debussy Danses are both technically and musically difficult, and require unique musicianship and talent to perform them satisfactorily. The Danse Sacree is a movement of restrained and gentle harmonies that greatly contrasts to the Danse Profane’s spontaneity.
Both dances are in modal D, the first in Dorian mode and the second in Lydian. The theme of the Danse sacrée may have been borrowed from another composer, one of Debussy’s friends.
The Danse sacrée metronome mark is ♩ =120 and the time is 3. The strings begin in the first seven bars and then the harp enters pianissimo. The Danse profane is marked ♩ =152, and in 3. It is like a swirling waltz alternating between animation and quiet. The use of modes gives it a likeness to music of Satie.
