The Ballad of the Harp-weaver Fran McGaughey - 2006

Lever or Pedal Harp Harp/Voice/Reader
Difficulty - Moderate

Edna St. Vincent Millay won the 1932 Pulitzer Prize for this very emotional poem. Imagine a young immigrant Irish mother and her son huddled in a tiny cabin, lonely and cold. The events they confront are well depicted. Her ending is a big surprise.   It is a long poem but many atmospheric parts are repeated, so there is not that much music to learn.

Harp 1 and Harp 2 are necessary. Harp 3, easy, is optional, but it yields a nice touch. The harp is actually “choreographed” to depict a rocking chair and a loom. Snow is included. Audiences respond very affirmatively.

The sound file is from a concert by the Brandywine Harp Orchestra under the direction of Janet Witman.
